Unseen photo of Charlotte taken by Kate released ahead of Coronation

Princess Charlotte reacts to hearing Paddington Bear’s name

A happy and relaxed Princess Charlotte is captured by the photographer she knows best – her mother – in a heartwarming picture to mark her eighth birthday on Tuesday.

Displaying a charming gap-toothed smile, the birthday girl posed for the Princess of Wales in Windsor over the weekend for an official photograph celebrating the occasion.

Charlotte, who is expected to join her siblings Prince George, nine, and Prince Louis, five, at the Coronation next weekend, has a big few days coming up.

The Princess, who will be back at school on Tuesday, had an early birthday treat over the weekend when her mother took her to see the ballet Cinderella at the Royal Opera House.

Charlotte, who is third in line to the throne, has been mad about ballet for several years and was accompanied by several friends on the trip to the opera house in Covent Garden, central London to see the performance a joint production by the Royal Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada.

At one point Charlotte, wearing a fuchsia dress with frills and her hair in a bun, and the other girls were taken on stage by Kate for photographs with the dancers.

Charlotte waved an illuminated wand and briefly danced, also raising her hands in an attempt to catch glitter as it fell on the stage.

Kate, 41, was wearing wide-leg trousers and an ivory Ghost blouse.

She has been nurturing her daughter’s love of ballet for several years and first mentioned it in 2017, saying that Charlotte “absolutely loves it.”

In 2018 she took Charlotte to see the Royal Ballet perform The Nutcracker at Covent Garden and in 2019 Kate disclosed that a member of the Royal Opera House had helped in giving her a “little introduction” to ballet.

Prince William too has spoken of his daughter’s passion. In a special edition of a series encouraging Apple watch owners to get active in December 2021, he described his children’s love of music.

“There’s a lot of hip movements going along. There’s a lot of dressing up,” he said. “Charlotte, particularly, is running around the kitchen in her dresses and ballet stuff and everything. She goes completely crazy with Louis following her around trying to do the same thing.”

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, who attends co-educational Lambrook School in Berkshire with her siblings, was born in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington on May 2, 2015, weighing 8lbs 3oz 8 pounds.

Sassy and full of energy, she is often said by her parents to be the child “in charge” at home. In addition to ballet, she also has a passion for gymnastics, horse riding, and other sports.
