GARDAÍ and health authorities are investigating a workplace death following a crush incident at the Dublin docklands.

Emergency services were called to the North Docks about 10.30am yesterday where they found a haulier with fatal injuries.

The man, aged in his 50s, was later taken to a local mortuary where a post-mortem examination was to be carried out.

It is understood the deceased is a man from north Dublin who worked in haulage.

Sources said he was killed following a crush at the location involving a crane and a container.

A forensic examination of the scene was later carried out by Garda scenes of crime officers.

The Health and Safety Authority has been made aware of the incident and is carrying out its own investigation, while a Garda probe into the tragedy is also under way.

A file will also be prepared for the local coroner.

Following the tragedy, the trade union representing dock workers called for better protection for its members across the country.

It has also called for a meeting with Business Minister Heather Humphreys to help improve safety conditions in the workplace.

Siptu ports, docks and harbour organiser Jerry Brennan said: “This tragedy today is the seventh such fatality in port and dock environments across the country in the last 24 months.

“Siptu is calling for an immediate meeting with the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, and health safety officials from within her department.

“This call to meet with the minister is also supported by the International Transport Workers’ Federation inspector for Ireland, Mickey Whelan.

“These tragedies are occurring with frightening and frankly quite sickening regularity,” Mr Brennan went on to add.

He also extended condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues of the deceased worker.
