Unearthed Princess Diana letter reveals how young William and Harry behaved at Christmas
In the 1990 note addressed to Ivy Woodward, the Princess of Wales said her two young sons could not wait to find out what gifts they were getting from family members and felt “thrilled that Christmas was on the horizon”. The mother-of-two had met Mrs Woodward in September of the same year while on a hospital visit to Prince Charles who had suffered a broken arm while playing polo. Diana encountered the woman while she sat at the beside of her son who was in a coma after being caught up in a motorbike accident.
The royal wife reached out to Mrs Woodward “one mother to another” as she prepared to celebrate Christmas with an eight-year-old William and six-year-old Harry.
The handwritten letter is up for auction and is estimated to fetch £3,000 on December 3.
Diana had sought to comfort the woman after her son Dean came home from hospital and there appeared to have been friction between her and her daughter-in-law.
The princess wrote: “I’ve been thinking about you a great deal as we head towards Christmas.
“It was lovely to hear that Dean has improved so much but he wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for his mother and your determination and strength to get him back to full health again.
“Maybe Dean’s lady feels resentment for not being able to cope with that situation back in August and that can produce guilt and in turn confusion arrived and people are hurt and now Dean has arrived home and she (Jane) has turned very possessive.
“You mustn’t worry about it as time will iron things out.”
Diana had visited Dean while he lay on a hospital bed and is said to have played a part in waking him up from a coma.
In her letter, Diana suggest her friend’s privacy had suffered after their details about their bond were leaked to the press.
She apologises for the “media intrusion” into Mrs Woodward’s life.
The three pages and envelope are being sold by Lawrences Auctioneers of Bletchingley, Surrey.

A second letter from the Prince of Wales’ former wife is also up for sale.
The two-page message was written by Diana to the couple’s bodyguard Sergeant Ronald Lewis after they returned from a trip to Nigeria’s capital, Lagos, in March 1990.
Diana thanked him for taking “such care over us” during the eight-day visit to West Africa.
She wrote: “What with the extreme heat and often difficult conditions moving around was a nightmare for you and your luggage!
“Thank you from the boss’s wife!”
The letter is also expected to go for £3,000 in next week’s private auction.
Sarah Ward, of Lawrences Auctioneers, said royal memorabilia, particularly anything related to Diana, are still in demand.
