The Duchess of Sussex, then just 12, describes her decision to write to Procter & Gamble after watching the advert for dishwashing liquid at school. In the interview, young Meghan says she was “furious” at the suggestion “women are fighting greasy pots and pans” – and asked the firm to change the line to “people are fighting greasy pots and pans”.

She tells Nick News: “I’m Meghan Markle. I’m 12 years old.

“Commercials – they do say a lot of things that most people don’t even notice. Mostly laundry and dishwashing commercials.

“When I first saw the commercial, I knew something had to be done because I was furious.

“And I said ‘Wait a minute, how could somebody say that? I think I’ll write a letter.”

She recalled boys in the classroom commenting after watching the advert: “Yeah, that’s where women belong – in the kitchen.”

Her response to this was: “It makes me think that they’re going to grow up thinking that girls are less than them – you know, like boys are better than girls.”

Three months after Meghan sent her letter, the advert was changed to her suggestion.

And, 28 years later, in May 2021, Meghan and Harry’s non-profit Archewell Foundation announced a multi-year global partnership with Procter & Gamble, focusing on gender equality.

Reacting to the unearthed clip, a spokesperson for Procter & Gamble told Newsweek: “We were moved to hear that, even as a young girl, the Duchess was motivated to speak out about gender equality.

“As one of the world’s largest advertisers, we recognize the power of advertising to shape culture, spark dialogue and change perception.

“That’s why we strive to use our voice in advertising as a force for good, raising awareness of, and sparking conversation around, topics including gender bias.”

Meghan’s letter said: “Dear sir, last week at my school we decided to watch the news for social studies.

“While flicking through the channels we saw a commercial for the new Ivory Clear dishwashing liquid.

“In the commercial they said ‘Women are battling grease’, meaning only women do dishes.

“When I heard this, the boys in my class started saying ‘Yeah, that’s where women belong: in the kitchen’.”

She continues: “So I was wondering if you could change this to ‘People all over America’.

“Thank you,

“Meghan Markle.”
