Emmanuel Macron slapped by man during visit to Drôme

Footage showed the French President’s head being hit by the egg before it bounced off his shoulder without cracking at the Eurexpo convention centre. His security can then be seen ushering the politician away while others shout “be careful” in French.

The assault was recorded by local publication Lyon Mag, who said the young man allegedly seen throwing the egg shouted “vive la révolution”.

Sharing a video of the assault, it tweeted that Mr Macron was the “victim” of an egg being thrown at him.

It said the “projectile bounced off the shoulder” and that the young suspect was “arrested by the security services”.

He was later seen being placed in handcuffs and led away.

Lyon Mag claimed that Mr Macron asked to meet the suspect after the incident so he could understand why he wanted to attack him.

Many social media users joked about the incident after footage of it went viral.

Martin Williams tweeted: “Security was scrambled…”

David Grunwald joked: “The assailant wanted to try again but deemed one attempt un œuf.”

Meanwhile Tony Baeza referenced the rising hostility towards politicians with his comment.

He wrote: “This violence against politicians has to stop. Un oeuf is un oeuf.”

Meanwhile, account EyesWideOpen wrote: “This CRACKED me up.”

Ironically Mr Macron was attending a meeting of food service and hospitality leaders at the time to discuss reviving the industry after Covid.

The event is called Sirha Lyon and took place in Lyon, south France.

During his visit, the French President made a series of policy announcements, including a tax exemption for tips paid on bank cards.

He also announced the creation of a new “centre of excellence” to promote French culinary traditions and train future chefs.

The incident is not the first time Mr Macron has been attacked by a member of the public.

In June, the president was slapped by a man who leaned across a metal barrier to strike him while shouting “down with Macronism” in Drôme.

Damien Tarel served three months in prison for assaulting a public official.
