UK’s ‘most remote pub’ is a flight, boat ride or 18-mile hike to reach

No roads reach The Old Forge, which is a small pub in the village of Inverie on Scotland’s Knoydart peninsula, in the Scottish Highlands. It is in a location so far away and isolated, it is recognised as the most remote pub in the whole of mainland Britain by Guinness World Records. Jumping on a local ferry for a seven-mile sea crossing, catching a plane or putting on the waterproofs to hike for 18 miles is the only way to reach The Old Forge.

If you choose to make the journey on foot, you will have the opportunity to enjoy hiking over the rocky Munros, where mountains can reach over 3,000 feet high. You will pass through the peaks of Glen Dessary and Glen Meadall to reach your end destination.

Or you can opt for the sea ferry route from Mallaig. This journey also offers the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking view of Scotland’s West Coast known as “Europe’s Last Wilderness”.

Those with the means to do so can reach the pub via plane or helicopter, as there’s even a landing pad in the beer garden. Or for a more outdoorsy arrival, a sea kayak or canoe can be a great way to cross Loch Nevis.

For those that need to rest after the long journey, the pub offers accommodation for guests, but if you are just staying for a short while before you move on to your next destination, there is plenty to enjoy.

The pub offers a range of dishes, including seafood platters as a specialty, alongside fresh homemade soups. Punters can dig into local delicacies such as Loch Nevis langoustine, Loch Nan Uamh rope mussels, and Isle of Rum water lobsters. To wash it all down, there is a fully stocked bar with real ales available.

Inverie is home to around 120 local residents spread across 86 square miles. The pub faced disaster last year when it was said to be closing down, but £320,000 was raised to keep the doors wide open. The Old Forge also received the government’s levelling-up pot of £219,000.

The pub is currently closed for refurbishment. Works include a refit of the kitchen, fitting in a brand new cellar, and creating a second bar area for punters to enjoy.

It is due to reopen for drinks only in May, with a restaurant service restarting in July.
