Ukrainian actor attacked near Dublin theatre in 'cowardly' assault

A Ukrainian actor was attacked near a theatre in Dublin after the final performance of a play he was in.

Oleksandr Hrekov, in his 20s, was assaulted close to the Abbey Theatre on Eden Quay in the Irish capital on Saturday.

He was rushed to hospital with ‘serious’ injuries that required stitches but is ‘recovering well’, an Abbey spokesperson said.

No arrests have yet been made but Gardai are investigating what has been called an ‘unprovoked, random act of mindless violence’.

Mr Hrekov had travelled to Dublin to perform in a Kyiv theatre company’s production of Brian Friel’s Translations.

Culture minister Catherine Martin has condemned the ‘cowardly attack’, along with other Irish politicians.

She said that the production of Translations was ‘an expression of the solidarity of the Irish people with the people of Ukraine’.

‘This is only the beginning of the Abbey Theatre’s artistic relationship with our friends at the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre.’
