UK weather: Tornado damages homes and cars in Surrey
Fire crews have been called out to reports of a tornado ripping through homes and cars – and tearing down fences and trees.
The start of the weekend has seen the south of England battered by heavy rain and strong winds and the Met Office has received reports of a tornado in the town of Chertsey, Surrey.
Crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue have also been sent to reports of a tornado hurtling through Ottershaw.
More than 20 homes suffered damaged roofs and 10 cars were struck by falling tiles on one estate, where fences and trees were also brought down.
Some two dozen firefighters were sent to the scene to help residents, according to SurreyLive.
The Met Office has tweeted radar images showing how the tornado in Chertsey formed.
The tornadoes came amid a severe weather warning for heavy rain across the South, causing major disruption for people hoping for a Christmas getaway.
More than 100 flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency where flooding is expected, and an additional 256 flood alerts are also live, meaning flooding is possible.
Up to 30mm (1.18in) of rain has been forecast in parts, with the severe warning in place until noon on Sunday.
Impact on transport will be of serious concern for those heading away for the festive season, with more delays anticipated on the roads and trouble also possible for people travelling by air and rail.
