UK weather: Thundery and unsettled weather with cooler nights ahead

Sun-worshippers will be disappointed this week as recent wet and windy weather is set to continue.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings in Northern Ireland, south Wales and parts of the south west of England expired at 9pm on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean the end of rainy conditions across the UK.

On the plus side, the wet weather should lead to cooler and less muggy nights – although if that doesn’t pan out, we’ve got loads of tips on how to get a good night’s sleep during warm weather.

The Met Office says while temperatures are set to remain around or slightly below the seasonal average for a few days to come, we’ll be seeing high winds and rain across the UK.

Discussing the forecast for Monday, a Met Office spokesman said: ‘Early rain across the south west, moving north east during the day. Some heavy showers expected in Scotland.

‘Breezy, especially in the south west. Warm in the east but cooler in the south west.’

The unsettled conditions will continue until Thursday, with ‘sunny spells and showers, at times torrential and thundery’ expected.

From Friday until July 23 forecasters expect to see ‘a mixture of sunny spells and showers, but also the potential for longer spells of rain’.

The spokesman explained: ‘Some of the showers will likely be heavy and thundery at times.

‘With time, low pressure is forecast to become centred to the north east of the UK, with higher pressure trying to edge in from the south west.

‘Given this synoptic set up, it will often be breezy, although winds may be light towards north eastern areas at first, meaning showers will be slow-moving here.

‘With the airmass predominantly originating from the North Atlantic, temperatures will often be on the cool side for the time of year, perhaps becoming a little more settled by the end of the period.’
