UK weather sparks driver WARNING as thunderstorms create ’treacherous’ conditions
Much of the country is braced for worsening weather conditions today, as the Met Office have issued a yellow warning covering much of the UK. Thundery downpours are are forecast across the country, resulting in warnings of treacherous driving conditions and possible risks of flooding and damage to to buildings. The wet weather has already caused travel chaos this morning, with an accident occurring on the M4 westbound after a car aquaplaned off the motorway.
Images of the aquaplaned vehicle were shared by South Wales Police Roads Policing Unit this morning, showing severe damage to the front of the car.
The police advised drivers to slow down, due to the dangerous driving conditions.
A second crash occurred on the eastbound carriageway of the M4, involving three cars.
All lanes have reopened in both directions, but delays remain.
A driver has described the conditions on the motorway as “treacherous”, due to the heavy rain reducing visibility on the roads.
Another commuter said they travelled two miles in 50 minutes, due to the severe traffic delays.
The M25 has also been hit by a serious of delays today, with four separate incidents occurring on the busy road.
It is not yet known whether the crashes, which included a six car pile-up, are weather-related.

The Met Office issued a 21-hour yellow weather warning yesterday, warning of thunderstorms.
They warned the severe weather could bring flooding and travel disruption on Tuesday, adding bus and train services could be cancelled.
The warning said: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from flood water, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

Heavy downpours began in the south and southwest of Wales from the early hours of this morning and is expected to spread further north this afternoon.
As much as 40mm of rain is expected in places and could be accompanied by hail and thunder.
The forecasters said the weather is expected to brighten up tomorrow.
The worst of the thunderstorms are expected to move in from about 1pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The afternoon commute is likely to be characterised by similarly treacherous road conditions, with a second thunderstorm due at 3pm.
But Wales isn’t the only part of the UK braced for thundery downpours, as the Met Office has issued warnings for almost the entire UK.
One warning is in place from 3am until midnight tonight, and covers the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, South West England, Wales and West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.
The second weather warning, which covers the same time, is for Grampian, Highlands and Eileen Siar, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.
The Met Office advises that: “Scattered slow-moving, thundery showers are expected to develop in the afternoon and may bring disruption to travel.
The forecasters also warn two weeks of rain are set to deluge parts of Britain to bring the wettest August in UK’s history.
Bookmakers have now cut odds for the second time this week on August entering the record books as the wettest on record.
On Monday the odds of August being the wettest on record was at odds of 4/1, but now bookies have slashed it to 5/2.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Brits should say goodbye to the sunshine for the time being and strap themselves in for a hectic month of heavy winds and record-breaking rain.”
