As the school holidays begin, much of Britain could be about to bake in the heat. with the mercury set to hit 34C in the early parts of next week.

According to the Met Office, temperatures could soar on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the sunshine will be sandwiched between periods of rain and thunderstorms.

A warm weather system is also going to take hold on the continent.

Parts of southern Spain and southern France could see temperatures exceed 40C (104F) – weeks after they reached a record-breaking 45.9C (114.6F) in Gallargues-le-Montueux.

London is expected to see temperatures reach 32C on Wednesday, with Manchester reaching 28C and and 30C in Bristol.

Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office Andy Page, said: “As we head into next week temperatures will increase daily across much of England and Wales as hot air is drawn up from France and Spain.

“Temperatures could reach 34C by Wednesday in parts of central, southern or eastern areas and heatwave thresholds are likely to be reached in some places.”

Unfortunately, forecasters believe there will be a north-south divide, with northwestern parts of the UK experiencing spells of rain – which could be heavy at times – as well as strong winds, bringing a risk of coastal gales.

High pressure is going to build across England and Wales from Sunday onwards – bringing much warmer air from Europe.

Sky News weather producer Joanna Coles said: “Temperatures may reach up to 33C (91F) on Tuesday in the South East, this being close to the highest temperature of the year so far of 34C (93F) which was recorded at Heathrow on 29 June 2019.

“It’ll also be rather humid too and there’s a risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms developing towards midweek.”

A return to cooler weather is expected towards the end of next week.

The stint of hot weather in southern parts of the UK is expected to arrive after heavy rain and unsettled weather over the weekend.

The Met Office issued a severe yellow weather warning for downpours in South Wales on Friday morning, adding that heavy rain could spark travel chaos.

In the south-east, north and west of the UK, rain is predicted to ruin the fun on Saturday, with heavier downpours expected across Scotland on Sunday – which could lead to localised flooding..
