UK weather: ‘Danger to life’ amber warnings issued as Britain braces for 24 hour washout
Wales is likely to be hit the hardest by heavy rain as an amber warning for potential flooding and travel disruption is in place until 11am on Saturday. Meanwhile, southwest regions of England including Bath and Plymouth have yellow warnings for rain until 3pm tomorrow. The same yellow warnings are also in place for northern regions such as Hull, Sheffield and Liverpool.
A burst of “polar maritime air” is also expected to bring colder temperatures to northern parts of the nation on Saturday, before hitting the rest of the country on Sunday and into next week.
This is expected to bring colder weather, with the first widespread frost of the season anticipated over the weekend, as well as a dusting of snow on higher ground.
Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said a “low-pressure system” over the Azores is expected to come across to the UK, bringing widespread rain with it.
She said: “The areas most at risk are the areas that are within the warning areas, so you’ve got parts of Cumbria and the Pennines. There’s a warning over Wales and then there’s another warning over parts of the South West.
“We’re looking at 30mm to 50mm of rain quite widely, with perhaps 120mm over higher ground for the warning in south Wales.”
The Met Office said: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.
“Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.
“Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
“There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.”
The Environment Agency’s five-day flood risk forecast stated: “Local flooding is possible from rivers and surface water across Wales and parts of northern, central and south-west England later on Friday and on Saturday.
“Local river flooding may continue through Sunday and into Monday on some longer, slower-responding rivers.
