Speaking to Sky News, former chief scientific adviser Sir David King expressed grave concerns that the UK could be engulfed by a third wave of Covid despite the high number of jabs being administered. He explained how Covid cases have rocketed to 7,600 a day in Chile despite the country being far ahead in jabbing its citizens as new variants wreak havoc and warned the UK could experience a similar downward spiral. Sir David went on to express his concerns about easing lockdown in the UK given the chaos in the South American nation.

Discussing easing lockdown, Sir David said: “I think that from our point of view, the population itself, we are all dying to get out of lockdown – so from that point of view it’s very clear.

“From the point of view of the epidemic, I think it is all a little bit more worrying.”

He added: “I have to stress what is now happening for example in Chile.

“Chile is a country where the rate of vaccination amongst the population was the third highest in the world and they were ahead of us in terms of the number of people who have had the vaccine.”

He went on to explain Chile are “now suddenly into a third wave” despite much of the country being vaccinated.

The former scientific advisor warned “what has happened in Chile is very, very surprising.

“A high percentage of people have been vaccinated but here is a variant of the disease coming through the country.”

He reeled off concerning statistics coming out of Chile where “they now have 7600 cases a day” and the total number of people in Chile who now have Covid “is over a million.”

The expert’s comments come as Britain begins to open up after a long lockdown.

Pubs with outdoor spaces, hairdressers and gyms have now reopened across England.

Gyms in Scotland are due to re-open on April 26,  in Wales it will be May 3 and it is not been announced when they will be back in Northern Ireland.

Requirements for social contact in indoor settings will continue though.

DON’T MISS:

There won’t be any need for vaccine passports when visiting venues.

However, proof of vaccination isn’t completely out of the question for Brits, as the idea is still being considered by officials.

A recent Government review stated it could potentially have a role to play in the hospitality sector.

Individual pubs, restaurants and so on could actually choose for their customers to prove their vaccination status.
