UK records lowest daily death toll for six weeks
Another 373 people have died with coronavirus in the UK and a further 15,845 infections confirmed – the lowest totals in weeks.
It comes as around 550,000 Covid-19 vaccinations were recorded in the last 24 hours, with the roll out continuing to progress rapidly. It takes the total to 12,014,288 first doses and 511,447 second doses.
Sunday’s figures are the fewest reported daily deaths since December 28 and the lowest number of cases since December 8. There is a downward trend in the data but there tends to be a lag in reporting at weekends, making the figures artificially low.
It comes as the vaccines tsar said he was ‘confident’ that over 50s in the UK would all be offered a first jab by May.
Earlier today, NHS England confirmed that a further 410 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in the country’s hospitals, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in the setting to 75,767.
Patients were aged between 28 and 100. All except nine, aged between 42 and 79, had known underlying health conditions.
The deaths were between April 19, 2020 and February 6, with the majority being on or after February 3.
There were 29 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.
There have been a further 461 new cases in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed infections there to 196,060.
Public Health Wales also reported another 28 deaths, bringing the toll since the start of the pandemic to 4,989.
In Scotland, 584 new cases and a further seven deaths have been recorded.
That brings the country’s respective totals to 185,792 cases and 6,438 deaths.
Northern Ireland recorded a further 334 new cases, taking the total to 106,867.
Nine deaths with coronavirus were also reported, meaning 1,931 people have now died with the disease there.
