UK records highest Covid death toll in five months

The UK recorded 146 Covid deaths on Tuesday – its highest total since March 12.

The dramatic increase in daily deaths was not matched by new cases, with the country reporting 23,510 infections.

It brings the UK’s respective totals since the pandemic began 130,503 deaths and 6,117,540 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 155,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

But despite the death toll being the highest for five months, that is partly due to the weekly pattern of reporting – with the total only eight higher than last Tuesday.

Separate figures out today did show that week-on-week deaths are rising significantly, with the numbers hitting their highest levels since March after a 24% rise.

Hospitalisations are down week-on-week, but cases are rising.

Meanwhile, more than 75% of adults are now double vaccinated in the UK.

The UK is fast approaching having 40 million people double jabbed, after 137,000 people got their second dose on Tuesday.

But the rollout is slowing dramatically, particularly for people getting their first jab, with just 32,250 people getting theirs today and the total rapidly flatlining at just over 47 million.
