UK mask law has varied across the UK until now, with Scotland and Wales building their own policies on tackling cases of COVID-19. Scotland was the first devolved power to introduce compulsory masks this year, as they require residents to wear them in shops. England has trailed behind the country, and will only add the policy tomorrow, more than a month after retail has reopened.

Who is exempt from wearing a mask?

Mask wearing will become a requirement by law as of July 24 for shoppers in England.

Experts have identified the indoors as a breeding ground for coronavirus, with enhanced spreading compared to the outdoors.

As such, most people will have to comply with the new laws or risk punishment, as rule-breakers could court high fines.

However, the Government has allowed exemptions for some people.

They apply to those whose health or jobs may suffer as a result of the policy.

The following groups do not have to wear a mask:

• Children under the age of 11
• Transport operators working on the job
• Constables or community support officers
• Emergency response staff such as on-duty paramedics or fire officers
• On duty officials such as border force employees
• People in their own vehicle but on public transport (such as a ferry)

Those who are not exempt need to wear masks in the following locations:

• Supermarkets
• Shopping centres
• Retail outlets
• Banks
• Post offices
• Public transport
• Coffee shops and takeaways (unless sitting down)

However, people will not have to wear them in the following areas:

• Restaurants and pubs with table service
• Hairdressers and treatment salons (unless specified by venue)
• Gyms and leisure centres
• Cinemas
• Concert halls
• Theatres

People with health difficulties or specific requirements due to a condition may also choose not to wear a mask.

For example, those with a disability or mental illness may opt-out, as it could cause them distress.

Wearers can also take them off to avoid harm, eat, drink or take medication.

Customers in shops may need to remove their masks at the request of police officers or shop staff who need to corroborate their identity.

Deaf people or those who require lip-reading also do not have to wear one.

Those who choose not to wear a mask and do not fall under exemption rules may attract a fine.

Rule breakers will have to pay a £100 fine if caught in the act, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

Police will be primarily responsible for enforcing the policy, but shop staff may call for their assistance or deny entry to those who are non-compliant.
