The UK is in the grips of another wave of coronavirus cases, with rates surpassing themselves day after day. The highly-transmissible Omicron variant has seen cases soar, prompting concern as we head towards the festive season. Several experts have called for a ‘circuit break’ lockdown to stem the already deadly spread.

Speaking today, Health Secretary Sajid Javid did not rule out new coronavirus measures before Christmas.

Appearing on The Andrew Marr Show, Mr Javid was asked whether he could rule out more restrictions, to which he said: “We are assessing the situation, it’s very fast-moving.

“We’ve seen with Omicron there’s a lot that we still don’t know about Omicron.

“That’s the truth of the matter. The reality is there’s a lot of uncertainty.”

The Health Secretary added it was “time to be more cautious”.

“We know this thing is spreading rapidly. We know already now that in London, it’s around 80 percent of infections, in England it’s around 60 percent of infections.”

With cases rapidly spreading, Brits have been urged to get jabbed – whether it be vaccinated for the first time or to receive their booster.

So what are Covid cases like in your area?

The region with the most cases over the past seven days is London, with 78,168 cases. This works out to a rate of 868.3 per 100,000 of the population.

The incredible difference between the number of cases in the lowest area – the North East – and the highest – London – is 637.4 percent.

In London, Omicron is now the dominant coronavirus variant and London Mayor Sadiq Khan said there is a “huge concern” at the spread.

Figures published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Saturday showed 83.4 percent of a sample of detectable cases in the capital from December 15 and 16 were found to have S gene target failure (SGTF), a way of detecting the likely presence of Omicron.

Government figures released on Friday showed the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 in London has risen to 1,534, up 28.6 percent on last week.

Experts have called on the Prime Minister to bring in stricter measures, saying the current Plan B restrictions don’t go far enough to stem the spread.

SAGE has warned if restrictions are not tightened, hospitalisations could soar to 1,000 a day by the end of the year.

Mr Johnson is expected to hold a Cobra meeting this weekend, meeting with the leaders of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales to discuss the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Reports state the Government is looking into a two-week lockdown after Christmas, however, nothing is set in stone as yet.
