United World College of the Atlantic, is a school inside a 12th-century St Donat’s Castle in Wales. Princess Alexia of the Netherlands and Princess Leonor of Asturias waved goodbye to their respective families this week and set off to join the school this week.
Princess Alexia, second in line to the Dutch throne will study exactly where her father King Willem-Alexander studied to gain his International Baccalaureate.
Princess Leonor is the heir presumptive to the Spanish throne and is the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
The Princess will also be starting a two-year International Baccalaureate program at the college.
The Princess is fully vaccinated which means she will not have to isolate when she arrives at UWC Atlantic College.
According to the Royal Household, Princess Leonor, will continue her public commitments as heir to the Spanish throne whilst being in the UK.
The educational facility is often dubbed as “hippie Hogwarts” due to its similar aesthetic to the infamous Hogwarts castle seen in the Harry Potter movies and accommodates around 350 international students.
The school boasts a wide variety of lessons and activities including Tai Chi, Tibetan literature and sustainability studies.
The college prides itself on offering “life-defining experiences for young people, enabling them to discover the possibility of change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership.
“Lessons start each morning at 0800 and finish at 1310. That’s not optional.
“As part of our holistic curriculum, you are expected to undertake a minimum of 2 hours of community service, 2 hours of physical activity and a further 2 hours of creative activity each week.
“These sessions take place in the afternoons, evenings and weekends.”
Ex-alumni of the college, Louise Callaghan, who later became foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times, wrote of the school: “It is a bit like a hippie Hogwarts: full of oddballs who think they are fighting the forces of darkness.

“There are also ghosts. Lady Stradling haunts the history tower, and the smell of lavender and a lilac mist precedes her apparition.”
“The ethos is, broadly, that people from all over the world can get along if you shove them together in a castle. That much we proved, some very passionately.”
UWC Atlantic College was established by Kurt Hanan, also founded Gordonstoun School in Scotland, where the late Prince Phillip and Prince Charles attended.
