Two London Underground stations so pointlessly close that you might as well walk
Two London Underground stations are so ridiculously close that punters have been told they’re better off just walking the distance – but this hasn’t stopped American tourists from carrying out the journey on Tube.
The Tube journey between the two takes just forty-five seconds, while the average walker can get it done in five minutes. Nevertheless, roughly 254 people made the Central London journey below ground last year – every single day.
The minute-long odyssey between Covent Garden and Leicester Square costs a whopping £6.30 on the Tube if paying by cash, while contactless tourists are still dishing out a relatively large £2.50.
Upon seeing the statistics, one X/Twitter user put a facepalm emoji and wrote: “Pretty sure those are not Londoners”.

The capital’s transport authority, Transport for London, even warns people to just walk unless absolutely necessary – but it still raked in £105,000 a few years ago from people making the trip, and presumably a similar amount recently, according to MyLondon.
Remarkably, those paying in cash for the Tube trip are actually paying more per mile than they would on the luxury Venice Simplon Orient Express – at a huge £36.21 per mile.
The UK capital is home to a number of Underground trips where tourists would be much better off simply walking the distance.

For example, the distance between Shepherd’s Bush Market station and Goldhawk Road station on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines only takes one minute.
Meanwhile, when standing at Hyde Park Corner station, you can actually see the entrance to Knightsbridge – but this doesn’t seem to discourage tourists from jumping aboard.
Finally, Oxford Street to Bond Street takes just one minute on the dusty Central Line, where walking would take just 300 seconds. Nevertheless, locals have pointed out this could take longer on a busy shopping day for the city’s most famous high street.
