Two suspects, one British and one Croatian, have been taken into custody while an investigation looks at whether they were drunk at the time. The Scot Carrier collided with Danish ship Karin Hoej in the Baltic Sea between Ysad and Bornholm island at 3.30am UK time.

The Swedish coastguard said they were investigating the crash, adding: “Additional criminal suspicions have arisen, including gross sea intoxication.”

The only two crew members of the Danish ship were reported missing but the Swedish Maritime Administration later said that a body had been found on board.

A spokesman said that screams had been reported in the water, adding: “One of the ships has capsized and is upside down.”

Divers were sent to save the sailors off southern Sweden.

Two helicopters and several boats from Sweden and Denmark also joined the rescue efforts.

They were hampered by darkness and fog, and the search was called off at 11am local time.

Rescue crews determined there was no possibility of finding survivors in the 39F (4C) water.

The crew would have had a survival time of just one hour, maritime authorities said.

All those on board the Scot Carrier, which was en route to the east coast of Scotland, are said to be safe and well.

The Scot Carrier is 295ft long and the Karin Hoej 180ft.
