Two Cadbury cheesecake desserts recalled over fears they may contain potentially deadly listeria
Two Cadbury cheesecake desserts are being recalled over concerns they could contain potentially deadly listeria.
Customers are being urged to return Cadbury Dairy Milk Cheesecake and Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel Cheesecake puddings to stores and not eat them.
The products were pulled from supermarket shelves due to “the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes”, a bacteria which can cause listeriosis.
Symptoms can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick, and diarrhoea.
In rare cases, the bacteria can cause serious complications such as meningitis.
Elderly people, pregnant women and babies are particularly at risk of serious complications from the infection.
The Food Standards Agency (FDA) has issued a recall notice and says signs will be put up in all stores selling the Cadbury products.
No other Muller or Cadbury products are thought to be affected.
In a recall notice sent to supermarkets, Muller – which produces the products under licence from Cadbury – said it was an “isolated incident” and the company is carrying out an “extensive investigation”.
According to figures from Public Health England, there were 135 reported cases of listeriosis in England and Wales in 2017, with 33 non-pregnancy deaths linked to the illness.
A spokesperson for Muller said: “As a precautionary measure a decision has been taken to recall some batches of Cadbury Caramel Cheesecake and Cadbury Dairy Milk Cheesecake desserts (2x85g), due to the possible presence of Listeria in the product.
“Muller produces these products under license from Cadbury and has stressed that this does not impact any other products it produces for Cadbury; or Cadbury Cheesecake variants in the UK or other markets.
“We have informed the Food Standards Agency of this action and they have issued a Product Information Recall Notice.”
