James Markham, aged 45, was attacked by a group of youths in Churchill Terrace. The incident took place at around 6.20pm on Monday, with police believing the victim “confronted” a number of youths who were “causing a disturbance”.
Mr Markham was stabbed in the lung, and pronounced dead at the scene.
Paramedics had arrived and made unsuccessful attempts to save him.
The victim’s wife was heard screaming after she discovered him wounded outside.
Police are still searching for a number of other individuals they believe were present during the attack.
Detective Inspector John Marriott, from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command, urged any parents to come forward if they believe their children were involved.
He commented: “We believe that James confronted a group of youths causing a disturbance and was stabbed as a result.
“The brutality of this response is beyond shocking and our thoughts are with James’ family who has been left devastated by their loss.
“The arrests of these two individuals is a significant development but we still need the public’s help to build a full picture of exactly what happened on Monday evening.
“A dedicated team of officers is working to piece together the tragic circumstances that led to this murder and to bring those responsible to justice.”
Mr Markham’s family are reported to be “devastated” at his death.
Both arrested teenagers are being held at a police station in east London.
A number of Mr Markham’s neighbour’s have paid tribute to a “kind, family man”.
