Two badly hurt in daylight city centre stabbing as police rush to area
Two men have rushed to hospital after they were stabbed in a shocking attack in Manchester city centre.
Emergency services rushed to Dale Street just after 6.30pm on Wednesday evening.
Pictures from the area showed armed police patrolling following the incident as three arrests were made by Greater Manchester Police.
The Manchester Evening News reported two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred when the area was packed with commuters using a nearby train station and car park.
Councillor Pat Karney described the incident as “horrendous” and said the assault raised anxiety and alarm for the public.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it responded to reports of an incident at around 6.30pm. An investigation is currently underway and that the victims had potentially life-threatening injuries.
The GMP said: “Officers are currently responding to an incident after reports came in at 6.30pm today (16 August 2023) that two men had been stabbed on Dale Street in the city centre.
“This is being treated as an isolated incident and the victims – a 20-year-old man and a 30-year-old man – have been taken to hospital for treatment of serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.”
They added: An investigation is underway and a scene has been put in place to aid our enquiries. Three males between the ages of 17 and 30 have been arrested on suspicion of assault.”
Superintendent Phil Spurgeon said they were treating the attack as a “targeted incident” and appealed for anyone with any information to come forward.
He explained: “We are treating this as a targeted incident, however, there will be an increased uniformed presence in the city centre to aid the investigation and to provide reassurance to members of the public.
“I want to appeal to anyone with information or footage – including CCTV, mobile or dashcam – to share it with the investigation team.”
Superintendent Spurgeon added: “If you have relevant information, I urge you to report it and help us demonstrate that those who use violence and intimidation have no place on our streets.”
