Trump supporters barricaded in pub as clashes break out at protest
Pro-Trump supporters have been barricaded inside a pub by police as clashes break out in London.
Video footage shot by a Metro.co.uk reporter on the scene shows officers forcing supporters inside the building as rows begin to emerge.
Anti-Trump protesters, who gathered in Trafalgar Square this morning to begin their demonstration, stopped the flow of people heading to Parliament Square to shout at the pro-Trump supporters.
The group involved had been stood outside the Lord Moon of the Mall pub at the time of the clash.
As more anti-Trump protesters emerged, police began removing the supporters in a bid to stop violence breaking out.
Anti-Trump demonstrators can be heard chanting ‘Nazi scum, off our streets’ at the small group as they are removed.
The protests began at 11am today, with thousands meeting in Trafalgar Square.
Organisers had initially planned to demonstrate outside the entrance to Downing street as Mr Trump holds talks with Prime Minister Theresa May.
However crowds will now stop at the north end of Whitehall with a ‘clear view of the access to Downing Street’, and proceed to Parliament Square by an alternative route.
Speaking at the protest, Rachael Carl, 21, and Itzayan Rocha, 20, from Minnesota, said: ‘We don’t like the racism that he stands for, the alienation, and all that.
‘We don’t think that represents us as Americans – so we’re here.’
Douglas Gray, 71, said he cannot stand Donald Trump as ‘he’s a moron who cannot string a sentence together’.
Mr Gray was seen holding up a placard at the protest reading: ‘Is Trump fit to represent brave Yanks who died saving our arses?’.
Other signs at the protest read ‘lock him in the tower’, ‘make this country great again, go home’, ‘without immigrants Trump would have no wives’ and ‘I’d call Trump a c*** but he lacks depth and warmth’.
Spokesman for Scots for Trump, Alastair Mcconnachie, said he had opposite views to the protesters.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he said: ‘We’ve come down here today from Glasgow basically to show that there are people in Scotland who are for Donald Trump.
‘We respect the man as an individual and we respect the office of the President of the United States.
‘We in particular like Trump for [a number of] reasons. One, he’s pro-Brexit and there are over a million people in Scotland who are pro-Brexit.
‘Secondly, we respect him because he puts his own country first, he puts America first, he stands up for the American working class. And he does so through the principle of borders.’
Demonstrators will not be permitted to march past Downing Street as part of Whitehall will be closed off, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Monday afternoon.
The Metropolitan Police said a ‘barrier plan’ will be in place across part of Whitehall just north of the Women’s War Memorial.
Scotland Yard said: ‘Protesters will not be marching past Downing Street at any point.
‘This is a multi-faceted security operation, and whilst the Met has a responsibility to ensure the right to peaceful protest, this needs to be balanced with the complex requirements of this policing plan.’
