Trump could BYPASS Congress to push through Iran-US conflict as tensions ERUPT in region
The US President could launch a war with the Middle Eastern nation after weeks of fighting between his country and Iran. NBC News reports that Trump’s advisers “have quietly been building” a case amid mounting sanctions from Congress. The channel’s Jonathan Allen said Trump has however reportedly told Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan he did not want to see the US go to war with Iran.
Mr Allen claims that Trump’s advisors’ plans could include drawing links between al-Qaeda and Iran to portray the nation as a threat to the US.
He added: “That could give Trump the justification he needs to fight Iran under the still-in-effect 2001 use-of-force resolution without congressional approval.
“That is exactly what administration officials have been doing in recent weeks.”
Reports suggest Trump has become frustrated with advisors such as John Bolton and Mike Pompeo.
He claims that their hard-line policy on Iran is threatening to see a struggle between Washington and Tehran.
Trump is hopeful conflict does not occur as it could break one of his election pledges to avoid expensive foreign wars.
Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also revealed his hopes that conflict would not become a reality.
According to IRNA news agency, he added: “As Leader of the Islamic Revolution has also announced, we are certain that no war will break out because neither we want a war, nor has anyone the idea or illusion that it can confront Iran in the region.”
Despite Trump’s position, he has made numerous threats of attacking Iran in the past week.
On Twitter he vowed to “officially end” Iran if the US was struck.
He said: “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran.
“Never threaten the United States again.”
