Trevor Phillips slammed for saying Meghan Markle had to ‘learn to be black’
Sir Trevor Phillips says Meghan had to ‘learn’ how to be black
Sir Trevor Phillips has faced a backlash after making scathing comments about Meghan Markle. The former politician claimed the Duchess of Sussex “had to learn how to be black on the job” after marrying Prince Harry. Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Uncesored Sir Trevor said Meghan “never regarded herself particularly as black” before joining the Royal Family. But Sussex fans have jumped to Meghan’s defence blasting the broadcaster with one supporter asking: “What the hell does he even mean?”

Responding to a clip of the conversation social media users slammed Sir Trevor for commenting on the sensitive topic.
User @TheStormbird said: “What does that mean? How do you learn to be black? How do you learn to be white, Hispanic, or Asian for that matter? All this division and identity by race is what causes problems.”
Another user @Alizonkc200 said: “What the hell does he even mean? Everybody’s race is an integral part of who they are and impacts on their experiences in life.”
Third user @MyrtleKnits asked: “Why is @TrevorPTweets getting involved in the abuse of Meghan all of a sudden? What on earth does he know about her background? Her mother is black, so I think she’s more than aware of race! Plus she’s talked about being bi-racial. Stop this nasty abuse.!”
Appearing on the chat show Sir Trevor said Meghan had a privileged background so it was “understandable”.
He said: “I think people mistake who Meghan Markle is, she herself said that until she became this princess she never regarded herself particularly as black and that’s understandable.
“She grew up in Los Angeles in the most wealthy black enclave anywhere in the United States – Park View, Windsor Hills… she went to a private Roman Catholic school and in a sense race was never really a part of her background.”
The comments come after the Duchess opened up about her race during an episode of her former podcast, Archetypes.

Speaking to popstar Marah Carey, Meghan said: “I mean, if there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband.
“Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman. Because up until then, I had been treated like a mixed woman. And things really shifted.”
During their infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey Meghan and Harry also made a claim that someone in the Royal Family questioned “how dark” their son, Archie’s, skin would be when he was born.
Commenting on the claim Sir Trevor said: “When she made this supposedly incendiary claim about somebody asking what colour Archie’s skin would be, well actually every black family… the minute you know somebody is coming, that’s what you’re speculating about.
“For white people, it’s hair and eye colour.”

He continued: “The point I really want to make about Meghan Markle is that she had to learn how to be black on the job, as it were, and I think she made a bit of a mess of it, she didn’t take advice, and that in some sense is why I think they squandered the opportunity to demonstrate something important about this country.
“We have the largest, uniquely mixed race population anywhere in the developed world that has come about through romance rather than coercion and they could have been standard bearers for that.”
