Travel chaos on Southern Rail, Gatwick Express and Thameslink due to ‘serious incident’

Trains are not running between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges as police deal with a “serious incident”. Services are being cancelled or revised and the disruption is expected to continue until midday.

An update shared on social media said: “The police are dealing with a serious incident on the track and both lines in the area have been closed.

“It is anticipated that specialist officers will be required to attend, and this will mean the route is shut until at least mid-morning.

“Southern and Thameslink are working closely with the emergency services and Network Rail to manage this incident.

“However, unfortunately there is not any way to run trains through the area before the police have finished their work.”

Passengers are being advised that journeys will take longer than usual.

In a tweet just before 9am, Southern said: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges all lines are blocked in both directions between the two stations.

“We are currently unable to run any trains between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges.

“Trains will be cancelled or revised to start or finish their journeys away from the affected area.

“Please delay your journey until later today, if possible. Journeys will take much longer than usual if you do decide to travel.

“Please avoid heading to Haywards Heath for trains towards London, and be aware no trains are calling at Balcombe in either direction.”

Gatwick Express tweeted: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Brighton and Gatwick Airport, all lines are blocked in both directions between the two stations.

“Gatwick Express services are currently unable to run between Gatwick Airport and Brighton in both directions.

“Trains will be cancelled or revised to start/finish from Gatwick Airport only.

“A reduced Gatwick Express service is in place between Gatwick Airport & London Victoria as a result of this.

“If trains and crews are displaced from their normal schedules, there may also be additional cancellations on this route.”

Tickets are being accepted on alternative routes.
