Train derails carrying 30,000 gallons of propane

A train carrying more than 30,000 gallons of propane and sheet rock derailed in Florida.

Six cars, including one holding propane, fell off the train tracks at the Sarasota-Manatee County border on Tuesday morning, said Southern Manatee Fire Rescue Chief Robert Bounds.

A seventh car, which contained another propane tanker, jumped the track but did not flip. The propane tanker that tipped over was hauling about 30,000 galloons. The other cars held sheet rock.

The derailment occurred around 11.20am near Boulevard East and 16th Street East.

No one was injured and no leaks were immediately detected using drones.

‘We were able to look at the tank and ascertain the levels of the tank from the outside, it’ll show up different colors if anything is actually leaking. There are no leaks,’ Bounds told Fox13. ‘There are no actual physical damage to the tank other than the rollover, but there is no significant damage to it.’

The crew cleanup is expected to take some time, said Bounds.

‘Right now, we’re kind of just in a “wait and see” phase,’ he said.

The derailment happened just over three weeks after a toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
