Tragedy as investigation launched into deaths of two soldiers at single army base

Police were called to Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire on Saturday morning following the “sudden death” of a 33-year-old man. An 18-year-old man was later found dead on the train tracks in Wythenshawe in Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

The army has confirmed that the soldiers were serving with different units however the MOD have not released any further information about their identities, ranks or regiments.

An Army spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of two soldiers.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both soldiers and we ask that their privacy is respected at this sad and difficult time.

“The deaths, which took place at Catterick Garrison and Manchester, are not connected.”

Both deaths are currently being investigated, but the police have said that neither incident is being treated as suspicious.

Police said they were assisting in preparing reports for the coroner.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the army base at roughly 5am on Saturday morning.

It was later confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the soldier’s death.

The spokesperson said: “Police are assisting in preparing a report for the coroner.”

The British Transport Police confirmed that it was investigating the death of the second soldier found dead at 4.17pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson said: “British Transport Police were called [to] the line in Wythenshawe, Manchester, at 4.17pm yesterday (6 February) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

The MOD have not released any more personal information about the two men and have said it would be “inappropriate” to comment further on their identities.

An army spokesperson said: “We are not prepared to release any personal information and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.

“We have a common law and Data Protection Act duty to protect the personal information of our employees and there is no good reason to release information in this case.”

Catterick is the British Army’s largest garrison covering 10 square kilometres with more than 13,000 personnel.

The base, near Richmond in North Yorkshire, is the British Army’s largest in the UK and one of the largest in the world.

It is also the Army’s largest training establishment in the UK.

The base is home to several Army units including 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, the Royal Lancers and 4 Scots (The Highlanders).
