Tory MP issues STARK warning ahead of EU election demolition – ‘Played into Farage’s plan’
In the wake of those failed talks, Tory MP Bernard Jenkin insisted Nigel Farage has been able to argue the two parties are trying to sabotage Brexit. Speaking on BBC Newsnight, Mr Jenkin also accused Mrs May’s of producing a deal that is “neither fish or foul”. The Tory MP agreed heavy Conservative losses in Thursday’s EU Parliament elections are likely.
Mr Jenkin added: “Nigel Farage has accused the two main parties of conspiring in a coalition against the people.
“We’ve played into Farage’s hands.
“And I fear we will see a heavy defeat in the EU election.”
Mr Jenkin’s comments come after Mrs May admission that if MPs back her deal, then there would be the chance of another referendum.
The Prime Minister’s concession, however, failed to get the full backing of Labour.
Without that crucial support for her withdrawal agreement, it is expected that she will once again lose her the vote in Parliament next month.
On her announcement for the chance of another referendum, European Research Group supremo, Jacob Rees-Mogg insisted that this new offer was “worse than before”.
He added: “We can and must do better and deliver what the people voted for.”
Deputy Chair of the ERG, Steve baker also criticised the Prime Minister saying: “There is no doubt the Prime Minister’s speech today has worsened the situation.”
Labour also criticised the plan saying that it was a “rehash” of previous plans.
MP for Wigan, Lisa Nandy, criticised the deal and accused it of being “very weak” although she admitted that she could back the agreement if certain conditions had been met.
She added: “What she seems to be offering is for Parliament to go round the same track that we have been round before.”
