Tory MP brilliantly backs Sajid Javid’s no deal Brexit boost – ‘This is serious’
Mr Blunt believes that although “it is very, very late”, the funding will help alleviate any issues people may have. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new Chancellor announced he would double the amount of cash available for ensuring the UK can withstand a full break with the EU on October 31. His cash injection will include £1.1billion for immediate spending on extra border guards, stockpiling vital medicines and a massive publicity blitz aimed at households and businesses.
He will also set aside a further £1billion reserve fund to cover emergency contingencies as the Brexit deadline approaches.
Speaking on BBC Newsnight, Mr Blunt said: “We have a Chancellor of the Exchequer who is actually releasing the resources to enable people to get on and do those preparations.
“It is very, very late I entirely accept.
“But there is now a degree of seriousness about preparations to leaving without a withdrawal agreement.”
Previously Mr Javid has said: “With 92 days until the UK leaves the European Union it’s vital that we intensify our planning to ensure we are ready.
“We want to get a good deal that abolishes the anti-democratic backstop.
“But if we can’t get a good deal, we’ll have to leave without one. This additional £2.1 billion will ensure we are ready to leave on 31 October – deal or no deal.”
The move was designed to show Brussels that the UK is ready and willing to deal with leaving without a deal in three months time.
On Friday it was announced that Mr Johnson had suffered his first defeat as Prime Minister.
The Conservatives lost their seat during the Brecon by-election.
The Liberal Democrats won back the seat.
The UK is still due to leave the EU on October 31, with Mr Johnson vowing to leave with or without a deal.
