Mr Johnson has consistently ruled out calling a snap election but according to insiders in his camp, there are plans to call for a general election next year. According to The Times, insiders are putting together a plan to call a general election by next summer in order to capitalise the split in the Labour Party. One senior member told The Times: “There’s a desire to get this done while Corbyn is still around.

“Labour is utterly divided — Brexit is killing them.

“Labour is in no fit state to fight a general election.”

Mr Johnson appeared at fundraising dinner on Tuesday night in order to boost funding for the party after donations had dropped under Theresa May.

Moreover, Sir Edward Lister, who is charged with overseeing Mr Johnson’s first 100 days in power in order to ensure that the party is on an “election footing”.

Members of Mr Johnson’s team have also stated that with Mr Corbyn as Labour leader, the Tory party could deliver a devastating blow to the Opposition.

Another member of Mr Johnson’s camp also stated: “Jeremy Corbyn being Opposition leader is a positive for us.

“It means we don’t have to spend time doing the groundwork we’ve already done on him on his successor.”

There is a desperate need for the Tory party to gain seats in Parliament after being left with a majority of three as it stands.

In another blow to Mr Corbyn, Mr Johnson hit out at the “semi-Marxist, job-destroying lunacy” of the Opposition leader.

However, a spokesman for Mr Johnson stated that there are no plans to call a general election and are instead focusing on beating his rival Number 10.

The spokesman said: “There are no plans for an election before 2022.

“The focus is on winning the leadership campaign.”
