Tory leadership bombshell: Johnson launches appeal against DESTRUCTIVE legal summons
Campaigner Marcus Ball had launched a campaign against the former Foreign Secretary regarding his claim that the UK sends £350million to the EU. Mr Ball, 29, has also revealed Mr Johnson has launched a judicial review application in the Administrative Court in defence on the summons. The campaigner, however, has insisted the application is a “particularly expensive part of the legal process” and has asked for donations from the public in order to continue his fight.
Mr Ball added: “When politicians lie democracy dies.”
Mr Johnson’s lawyers will argue the criminal proceedings brought against him are unlawful and should be suspended until the judicial review application is determined.
As of yet, Mr Johnson’s representatives have not responded to the report.
The summons to Mr Johnson was issued last week and called the former Foreign Secretary to Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Ball, who is also the founder of Brexit Justice, has raised more than £200,000 through an online campaign to prosecute Mr Johnson.
If Mr Johnson’s judicial review application is deemed successful, another judge will decide whether the summons was lawful or not.
The news comes as Mr Johnson launched his official campaign video on Monday.
The former Foreign Secretary is regarded as one of the frontrunners in the leadership race.
In the video, Mr Johnson meets voters and promises one former Tory voter that he will take the UK out of the EU by October 31 with or without a deal.
Environment Secretary Michael Gove has also emerged as a candidate to challenge Mr Johnson and has insisted that he will deliver Brexit.
One campaign source for Mr Gove said: “Simply trying to go for a No Deal before the UK is properly prepared will lead to a general election with Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street and risks Brexit being cancelled altogether.
“It’s not enough to believe in Brexit – you’ve got to be able to deliver it.”
