Tory hustings host reveals ‘moment of real tension’ as he EXPOSES Conservative Party row

Comedian Matt Forde has said that there was “a moment of real tension” between Dominic Raab and Philip Hammond over their views on how to take the party forward. All week discussions have been held with candidates putting themselves forward to express why they should become Theresa May’s replacement. Mrs May steps down formally on Friday.

Her successor is expected to be named by July.

But Mr Forde told BBC Newsnight that all was not agreeable at the hustings event.

He said: “Dominic Raab tonight in that room felt like he was a member of a different political party.

“There was a moment of real tension between him and Philip Hammond.”

The likes Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid have all been putting forward their plans on how to run the country.

Mr Gove sparked controversy among Brexiteers for claiming he was “not wedded” to the UK leaving without a deal.

He accused supporters of no deal as people who didn’t “believe in this country”.

Mr Gove was a leading voice in the Leave camp, which secured the majority in the 2016 EU referendum.

He believes that if no deal became a reality it could lead to a general election, and a potential Labour government.

But pro-Brexit MPs raged at Mr Gove for his comments.

Iain Duncan Smith said: “The salvation of the Conservative Party lies in getting out on October 31.

“It seems he no longer cares about Brexiteers and is playing to another gallery.”
