Tory councillor suspended after racist 'bring back the golliwogs' post

A Conservative councillor who is standing for re-election today has been suspended by her party for sharing ‘deeply offensive’ posts on Facebook.

Carol Crump, a former mayor of Broxbourne in Hertfordshire who still sits on the local council, publicly shared one post which said: ‘bring back the golliwogs’.

All of the offensive posts date form 2016 and were publicly viewable until recently.

Another featured a cartoon of a woman in a headdress saying ‘please help me’ and being offered contraceptive pills.

She also re-posted a joke about a ‘devout Arab Muslim’ who is told to ‘p**s off and wait for a camel.’

Labour, who are standing against Ms Crump in the Cheshunt South and Theobalds ward in today’s elections, have called for her to resign.

Yesterday afternoon, Broxbourne Conservative Association confirmed that an unnamed member of the party had been suspended pending a full investigation.

Ms Crump has served on Broxbourne Council since 2002, and was mayor of the borough for two stints; in 2008 and in 2019/20.

Following requests for comment, her account has been made private and the posts are understood to have been removed.

Steve Basing, party secretary of Broxbourne Labour, who was alerted to the posts by a local resident, said: ‘The content of these posts are disgusting and it is completely unacceptable for an elected official to post such content.

‘I therefore call on Ms Crump to resign with immediate effect and also call on the Conservative Party to expel her from the party.

‘Over the past few years, the Conservative Party has stressed how it has broadened itself and made sure it is a safe home for people of all ethnic groups.

‘If Ms Crump isn’t expelled from the party that work would be massively undermined.’

Cllr Paul Mason, chairman of the Broxbourne Conservative Association, said: ‘An unnamed member of the Broxbourne Conservative Association has been suspended pending a full investigation and no further comment will be made.

‘In accordance with the values and beliefs of the Conservative Party, we will not accept or tolerate any form of racism or disrespectful behaviour by any member or individual associated with the party.’

Ms Crump, who is listed as the sole director of Cheshunt cleaning company Cleandustrial Services Ltd, did not respond to requests for comment.
