A tombstoner has sustained serious injuries after throwing themselves off a harbour into shallow water while the tide was out. The victim was taken right away to the hospital following the incident at Charleston Harbour in St Austell.

Emergency services were called to the location right away.

A St Austell Coastguard representative reported that their crew was requested to help the injured man together with Cornwall Air Ambulance and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

They said: “The team worked alongside the ambulance staff to extract a person injured whilst tombstoning in the harbour.

“Once on a stretcher, he was transported to hospital by the ambulance service.”

St Austell Coastguard has reiterated the need to thoroughly assess the water’s depth before entering to avoid incidents like the one that occurred.

They noted how in this particular case, the incident transpired because the tide was low, resulting in insufficient water depth for safe jumping.

They added: “Please ensure you check the depth of any water before you enter it,

“This incident happened due to the tide being out and depth of water was not deep enough to jump in.”

It is strongly recommended that individuals contact emergency services by dialling 999 and specifically request assistance from the coastguard in the event of any accidents or emergencies occurring along the coastline.
