‘Today is MOST DANGEROUS day for Theresa May’ BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg issues warning

BBC News’ Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg warned Prime Minister Theresa May that “today” was the most “dangerous” day to her premiership. It comes just a day of the Prime Minister outlined her “new Brexit plan” as she delivered a speech in London setting out her last-ditch attempt to get her Brexit deal over the line. Many Tory MPs were furious with the Prime Minister’s announcement on Tuesday which opened the door to a second Brexit referendum and if supported would give Parliament a say over future customs policy.

Speaking on BBC’s Politics Live, Kuenssberg warned: “It certainly occurs to me that today is one of the most dangerous moments for Theresa May that we have seen.

“I include the day after the election result, the day after the meaningful vote, her Brexit deal was killed off for the first time.

“I wonder by Monday if we will be on a point of her Party ousting her finally.”

Later on Twitter, Kuenssberg wrote: “1. David Mundell is going to see the PM later this afternoon – several other Cabinet sources saying now they can’t see the PM lasting beyond Monday – others believe she will

“2. But…. is there now a race by those loyal to May to persuade her to quit before she’s shoved out by 1922 backbench committee? Maybe, but another cabinet minister tells me ‘she has to present the bill’”

She later added: “In last half hour – 1. Cabinet minister told me it’s the ‘end of the line’ – and they will tell PM.

“2. Another says she can’t make it beyond Mon (EU elex results are overnight Sun/Mon)

“3. Another says she must stay – ‘no difference’ whether goes now or in a few weeks”.

Kuenssberg also said: “Sources close to Sajid Javid say he has asked to see the PM to push her to remove the second referendum vote requirement from the bill – he believes it is not what was agreed – he is not only senior minister who is v unhappy – situation getting very serious”.

The Prime Minister’s fresh Brexit approach was condemned by the Labour Party, and Conservative MPs quickly after her speech.

The deal was described as “dead on arrival” by Conservative Mark Francois, vice-chairman of the European Research Group (ERG).

The Conservative Party’s influential 1922 Committee is also expected to meet on Wednesday afternoon.

Last week after meeting with the 1922, Mrs May said she would set out the date of her departure after the fourth vote on her Brexit deal, expected during the first week of June.

Since Mrs May’s speech on Tuesday, Tory MP Nigel Evans, who sits on the 1922 executive, said he would be seeking a rule change to hold another confidence vote and the Prime Minister should “make way for fresh leadership without handcuffing her successor to a poisoned baton”.

Downing Street has confirmed the Government will bring its key Brexit legislation, the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB), to the Commons in the week beginning June 3.

A No 10 spokesman told a Westminster briefing: “Our commitment to have the second reading of that Bill in that week remains.”

The spokesman added that the Bill will be published on Friday.
