The Omicron variant has caused a nationwide surge in coronavirus testing as Brits demand to know whether they need to self-isolate to keep themselves and their families safe before Christmas. Thousands of pharmacies have already run out of lateral flow tests just two weeks before Christmas, and a temporary lack of in-person PCR tests in England on Tuesday has been caused by exceptionally high demand.

Where can I get a same day free PCR test?

Express tests which are available in as little as three hours are available in some areas – but these do not come from the Government and you will be required to pay for them.

Not all providers offer the same testing services.

Before you look for a private provider, you’ll need to identify what testing service you need.

Can I book a private PCR test?

If you are self isolating, you can leave the house to get a PCR test at any of the UK’s NHS walk in sites, and you can also book an appointment online.

However, these are currently fully booked and there is a shortage of spaces on the run up to Christmas following the Government’s announcements last week.

How much does a private same day PCR cost?

The cost of a same day PCR test varies across the country.

For example, Express.co.uk has found ones for as little as £80 from one company in Edinburgh and another for £95 in Manchester, but other places can charge as much as £250 for one that guarantees results the same day.

Is PCR Fit to Fly the same as NHS free PCR?

In theory, yes, they are the same coronavirus test.

But only a private PCR is eligible for travel abroad.
