'Thundery' showers to continue this week – but a sunny Bank Holiday weekend on the cards

AFTER a month of April showers and some scorching days in between, Met Éireann have confirmed that the mixed weather isn’t going anywhere yet.

But with “thundery” showers and some frost expected this week, sun seekers will be delighted to see some good weather return this weekend.

Punchestown punters can expect some rain today, but this is expected to dry out by this evening.

Wednesday will start off bright with showers in the west, but this will become more widespread nationwide throughout the afternoon.

“Some will be heavy with a risk of hail and thunder,” Met Éireann forecasters said.

The showers will become isolated on Wednesday night, bringing some sunshine into Thursday morning – but more potential hail and thunder are expected throughout the day.

However, there will be “some rain about the country on Friday but overall a good deal of dry weather,” the national forecaster said.

“Maximum temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in moderate northwest breezes, turning cold and mostly clear overnight with some grass frost.”

Current indications suggest that Saturday will be dry and bright with sunny spells and patchy cloud, with temperatures between 10 and 14C.

While Sunday looks set to be another dry day with a mix of cloud and sunshine and highs of 16C.

The “violent but short-lived” Storm Hannah brought 120km/h gusts to the south and southwest coast last week, leaving power cuts and damage in its wake.

Flights were cancelled at Kerry, Cork and Shannon airports. At peak, more than 33,000 businesses and houses were left without power.
