Thunderstorms forecast across UK bringing end to fine weather

Don’t forget to take your umbrella if you’re heading out today or tomorrow, as storms are forecast across the country.

Some areas have already seen thunderstorms, and there is more to come with a yellow weather warning in place for Northern Ireland.

Martin Bowles, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, told Metro.co.uk: ‘There have been a few storms in the Midlands and there are going to be more.

‘We are expecting the most impactful thunderstorms to be likely in Northern Ireland.

‘As far as the rest of the UK is concerned, there is a risk of thunderstorms. We are expecting some storms in north Wales and north west England today.

‘In the south east there is a chance of storms tomorrow. It’s quite difficult to be very specific about the time and place for thunderstorms but it looks a bit more unstable in the South East tomorrow so there’s a reasonable chance of storms, particularly near the south coast but also in London.’

The storms are being brought in by a plume of air coming in from Northern France, Belgium and Germany where there are some quite hot temperatures at the moment.

Mr Bowles said temperatures will remain above average for the next three or four days, with maximum temperatures of around 23C.

The Met Office weather warning for Northern Ireland says that there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

It adds that there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

The warning is in place until 9pm this evening.
