Thousands still can't get online as Virgin Media outage drags on for 16 hours
Britons across the country are struggling to get online this morning after a string of Virgin Media outages across the country.
People started running into problems with their home and mobile internet connections shortly before 5pm. Around half an hour later 30,553 reports had been sent to Downdetector, a website monitoring outages.
Virgin Media, which serves 5.3 million UK customers, said the problem had been fixed in the early hours of the morning, but thousands of customers still say they are having issues. The firm said the issue had nothing to do with increased demand during the lockdown or the capacity of its cable network.
Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, London, Liverpool, Southampton, Edinburgh has the highest rates of outages. According to Downdetector 78% of customers had issues with their cable broadband, 19% with their mobile internet and 2% with their phone connection.
A Virgin Media spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘An intermittent broadband issue that started yesterday evening was fixed in the early hours of this morning.
‘This was not caused by increased usage or a lack of capacity. We know how frustrating this was for customers and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.’

On Twitter last night the company said: ‘The issue is causing broadband connectivity to drop for a few minutes before returning again.
‘We know that this is not being caused by increased usage or a lack of capacity – it is a network technical fault. Our teams are currently working on a fix.’
Virgin told customers on social media that they should try a reboot this morning to fix the problem, but some say they have done this and are still having issues.
Many of those who can still get online have reported significantly reduced speeds, with their 200mb connections dropping to 30.
People leaving feedback on Downdetector this morning said their connection was still ‘off and on’ with one saying they were going to have to be ‘extra creative today’ when homeschooling their child.
Venting their frustration on Twitter, one unhappy customer said: ‘When I die, you lot better get Virgin Media Wifi to sponsor my funeral so they can let me down one last f*****g time.’
Another said: ‘To be fair my family has been with virgin media 17 years and this happens pretty often tbf. @virginmedia improve your infrastructure!’
A sports instructor added: ‘Anything you’re going to do about my 100 customers on zoom that got dropped out of a fitness class i was teaching and I had to refund???!!! I’m not even with Virgin but they all are. Well done Virgin. Good effort.’
