Thornberry shut down by Tory MP for backtracking on Brexit- ‘Why should anyone trust you?’

The Shadow Foreign Secretary faced harsh criticism as Brexit minister Mr Kwarteng pointed out that Labour said they “accepted the referendum result” but have continued to campaign against it for the past two years. Mr Kwarteng asked why should voters trust the Labour Party after they backtracked on their Brexit policy. His accusation comes as the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s bid to call a snap general election was rejected by Commons including the Conservative’s opposition party as Ms Thornberry explained they “don’t trust” the leader.

Mr Kwarteng said: “I have a direct quote from the Labour manifesto in 2017.

“PagE 24, Labour accepts the referendum result. Now in the last two years you have said that you want to campaign against the referendum result.

“You want to scrap that result so, why should anyone trust you?”

The audience cheered at his comments as the fury followed host Fiona Bruce’s attack on Ms Thornberry earlier on the London show.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary was branded “ridiculous” by Ian Dale and Brexit Party’s Richard Tice for pushing to Remain in the EU despite also trying to get a deal.

Ms Thornberry had previously revealed she will not allow Prime Minister Boris Johnson to call an election because opposition parties “don’t trust him”.

Ms Bruce said: “If you were to win a general election which is the point you’re getting to, you would go back to Europe, try and get a better deal, have a referendum where Remain is an option, would you then be campaigning against your own deal?

“To Remain? Against your own deal you probably would have negotiated or would you be actually saying don’t support our deal?

“Are you going to campaign for your deal assuming you get one and you get in power or will you campaign to Remain against your own deal?”

Ms Thornberry said: “Personally, I will campaign to Remain. I will negotiate to the best of my ability a deal that will look after jobs in the economy.

“But the best way to look after jobs in the economy if for us to Remain.”

Columnist, Iain Dale interjected calling her comments “ridiculous”.

He said: “Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds?

“You think people are going to vote for you on that basis? Have you no shame?”

Brexit Party MEP Richard Tice echoed Mr Dale’s comments calling Ms Thornberry “utterly, utterly ridiculous”.

Ms Thornberry is adamant Mr Johnson’s no deal Brexit would have a huge impact on healthcare and the vulnerable as she suggested there would be “queues around the block”.

Ms Bruce said: “What is going to happen? I’m following this very closely and I am unsure what the Labour position is.”
