The senior member of the Royal Family has joined forces with Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York, to pen a cry for solutions to “save the earth”, and the innovation required to find such remedies. Prince William and Mr Bloomberg, the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions comment on the “environmental devastation we are witnessing” referring to instances such as record-breaking world temperatures, wildfires across Turkey and Greece, plus historic flooding in Western Europe, the East Coast of the United States and Central China.

They state the scale of this devastation “is larger than what was feared possible even a year ago”, and comment on the struggles facing those impacted by the events of climate change, and that the time to act is now.

They write: “For so many, simply breathing air and drinking water is now a health hazard. Many others have seen their food supplies grow scarce and their livelihoods threatened by disruptions to the climate, including in the ocean.”

Before adding: “The science tells us that this is the decade to act – and that waiting is not an option… we must meet this moment with the optimistic spirit of President Kennedy’s Moon Shot.”

The pair compare their goal of “save the earth” to the space race of the 1960s which saw the US and the Soviets compete for the exploration of space using satellites and manned spacecraft, and who could reach the moon first.

Prince William and Mr Bloomberg’s commentary on current events, showing the urgency of acting on climate change, lends itself to the discourse of inspiring others to enact change and provide solutions which they describe as “bold and decisive action”.

The pair hope to seek innovative solutions allowing us to “defeat climate change and protect the environment” by making “changes that will benefit generations to come.”

The article from the senior member of the Royal Family, and the US businessman and philanthropist comes following the launch of The Earthshot Prize by Prince William last year.

The Earthshot Prize recognises “innovators and pioneers” who come up with global solutions to “the world’s greatest environmental challenges over the next 10 years”, and Mike takes on the role as global adviser to The Earthshot Prize winners.

The pair describe the global effort as “a new call to action to the world: to unleash and support a new generation of invention, innovation and entrepreneurship” which is “propelled by a shared sense of urgency to address the crisis at hand”.

The Earthshot Prize began its search in November last year for 15 “ground-breaking” innovations, which aim to address impacts of climate change, and which they say achieves five goals “protecting and restoring nature, cleaning our air, reviving our oceans, building a waste-free world and fixing our climate.”

They report that so far, thanks to the guidance of global experts and an esteemed Prize Council, the effort has uncovered “a wealth of immensely promising and inspiring work being done by individuals, governments, grassroots organisations and businesses”.

The first five winners of The Earthshot Prize will be announced in London next month, and will receive 1 million-pound ($1.37 million U.S. dollars) prizes and “support from a growing global alliance of investors and like-minded organisations in the public, private and nonprofit sectors” in order to “catalyse innovation and scale truly groundbreaking solutions”.
