The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are due to visit the UK next month to attend a series of charity events “close to their hearts”. According to royal expert and author Richard Fitzwilliams, their return — the first since the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June — is set to prove “fairly difficult” after the pair’s “popularity plunged in Britain”.

Harry, 37, and Meghan, 41, will be attending the One Young World Summit in Manchester, which brings together young leaders from more than 190 countries, on September 5.

During the visit, the Sussexes will also be at an event for the Invictus Games in Germany.

A spokesperson for the US-based royals said they were “delighted” to be coming to the UK.

But Mr Fitzwilliams warned that since stepping down as senior members of the Firm in January 2020, the couple’s “ratings have dropped phenomenally”, which could bring controversy to their trip.

He told Newsweek: “They know when they appear that they are at war with the press here…

“I’m rather like venturing into the lion’s den now because you’ve got the public who are not supportive and you’ve got the press who are ferociously against then.”

Mr Fitzwilliams added: “And then, you’ve also got the Royal Family, where there’s a rift.”

The duke and duchess kept a low-key presence during the Jubilee celebrations.

They were only part of one official engagement and watched the Trooping the Colour parade in London from a window, while not taking part in the carriage procession.

The Jubilee was the first time the two made an appearance together at a royal engagement since 2020.

The pair, who live with their two children in Montecito, California, visited the Queen in April on their way to the Invictus Games in the Netherlands.

Before this, Prince Harry was last reported to be in the UK in July 2021, while Meghan is believed to not have been in the country since the year before.

Their September trip comes amid an ongoing legal dispute over their UK security arrangements.

Harry last month won his bid for a High Court review of a Home Office decision to not allow him to personally pay for police protection for himself, his wife and their kids when on British soil.

His request came after the prince lost his taxpayer-funded police security when stepping back from royal duties.

Meghan — a counsellor for One Young World along with other big names including Justin Trudeau, Jamie Oliver and Sir Richard Branson — will give a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the One Young World Summit.

She and her husband will also attend the WellChild Awards in London, where the duke will make a speech.

Before that, they will attend the Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 One Year to Go event.
