Theresa May’s reaction goes viral after MPs cheer Boris for abolishing her backstop

Boris Johnson was praised by his Tory MPs in the Commons today for abolishing the backstop that had doomed Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreements. Mr Johnson said he had done what “sceptics and doubters” thought was impossible by removing the biggest hurdle in the Brexit talks. However, his boast led to a viral moment when the incredible reaction from his predecessor Theresa May, who proposed the backstop, was caught on camera.

Conservative MP and former Brexit Secretary David Davis said that Mr Johnson had done “what they said was impossible two weeks ago”.

Later in the Commons, the Prime Minister said: “May I just remind doubters and sceptics, they said it was impossible to reopen the negioations!

“They said we couldn’t get rid of the backstop and, Mr Speaker, they said we couldn’t get a deal.

“Well, to those people, I say, there is a very good deal here on the table and I call on you to vote for it.”

At another point, cameras cut away to Mrs May when the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford said that Mr Johnson’s deal “was actually worse than Theresa May’s deal”.

One online viewer tweeted: “Each time another MP is saying that the ‘great deal’ Boris Johnson is proposing, is even more worse than the deal Theresa May proposed, her face expression says a lot.”

Another said: “Her face looks like she hates it so much, that Boris Johnson might deliver Brexit with a worse deal than what she came home with.”

A third user joked: “I think I could watch Theresa May’s face for this entire debate. We need a May cam.”

One user later tweeted: “Theresa May’s face as Ian Blackford describes Boris Johnson’s deal as worse than hers is everything.”

The remarks from MPs come as Parliament is sits today on a Saturday for the first time in 37 years.

Commons Speaker John Bercow selected the Letwin amendment that, if passed, would require the PM to ask for a further extension to the Brexit process by the end of Saturday.

Sir Oliver Lewin was urged by Iain Duncan Smith to remove his amendment as it means the Prime Minister may pull the plug on MPs voting on his Brexit deal if it is passed later this afternoon.
