The underrated UK city constantly named one of the worst but is a hidden gem

A UK city constantly slammed as one of the worst has been rated the most underated. Thousands of people replied to a question on social media which asked: “What’s a UK place people think is a dump but is actually nice?” It sparked a huge wave of replies – but only one came out on top: Liverpool.

The northern powerhouse was by far the most popular response to the Reddit question, and was once home to arguably the greatest cultural phenomenon of all time – The Beatles.

The most popular response offered Liverpool as the answer, with one user saying: “It is simultaneously one of the nicest cities while also being a complete s***hole if you walk slightly too far outside the centre/docks.”

The person continued: “I love it there, but can’t really see where the money was spent.”

People were quick to agree. One said: “I love Liverpool dearly, it’s my favourite place, but this is true. I lived in the Georgian quarter for a while, and had to do my laundry in a Toxteth laundrette when my washer broke, and wow it is a depressing dump of a place”.

More insight was provided as one detailed how “the centre and docks are amazing but as soon as you are out, it’s like a Victorian workhouse”.

Meanwhile another said: “I don’t think a tourist would wander over to Scotty Road or The Dingle.”

Scotty Road is a nickname for Scotland Road – a section of the A59 near the docks in the Vauxhall district of the city – which was once home to lots of working-class accommodation. The area was left in decline when its residents were moved into new council houses in other areas like Croxteth and Halewood.

The area once had more than 200 pubs but today just one – The Throstles Nest – remains.

Another amusingly talked about how “one minute I’m in the city centre, next I’m in an estate”. Liverpool is a close-packed city where its locals are usually passionate about the community.

Liverpool has some lovely areas too, such as the Royal Liver Building, and the converted dockland buildings which play host to some lovely restaurants and bars.

The city is most famous for two things – music and football. It birthed the most famous and influential band of all time, The Beatles, as well as other significant artosts like Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black. You can still visit The Cavern, where The Beatles regularly played – although it isn’t quite the original, which had to be turned into a car park.

Meanwhile, the city is home to two of the country’s most successful football clubs, Liverpool FC and Everton FC. The two are rivals, although have quite a friendly rivalry given the unity of the people in the city in the face of government cuts to the area.

House prices in the area are below the national average, at just £196,000 – the national average is £285,000.

Despite these attractive numbers, the annual crime rate in Liverpool is at 142 percent of the national average.
