The UK’s most dangerous places to do the school run
Britain’s most dangerous place to do the school run has been revealed and it doesn’t make good reading for parents in the capital.
Research from personal injury experts at Claim.co.uk found that nine of the ten most deadly areas for children under the age of 16 to walk to school are in London.
Hackney in east London topped the list, with 34.62 fatal crashes involving under-16s per 100,000. That’s a 84 percent higher than the national average.
Coming in second is Lewisham in south east London, with 28.35 fatal crashes per 100,000. While Haringey scored 27.26 fatal crashes over the same period making it the third most dangerous area to walk to school. This is despite a 27 percent reduction in fatalities since 2018.
The experts at Claim.co.uk analysed the latest Department for Transport data on reported road casualties, focusing on incidents involving a pedestrian aged 15 or under which took place on an urban road with a speed limit of 20mph.

The only area outside the capital to make the unwanted top ten list was in the south west of England.
The City of Bristol recorded 21.6 teen deaths per 100,000 in the measured time period, making it the most dangerous place for schoolchildren to walk to school, outside of London.
Parents in Camden, Islington, Waltham Forest, the City of London, Southwark and Tower Hamlets should all be wary too, as they make up the rest of the top ten.
As well as finding Britain’s most dangerous school run routes, the number-crunchers worked out the country’s safest areas to cross too.
The East Midlands county of Leicestershire was among the safest with just 0.04 deaths per 100,000 reported annually, while Warwickshire to the south (0.05) and County Durham to the north (0.06) were also significantly less dangerous than other parts of the UK.
However, these areas weren’t the safest places for the UK’s kids.
Parents in Darlington, Milton Keynes and Dorset should feel the safest when their kids are heading off to school, as these are just three of the many areas where no accidents involving school children on 20mph roads occurred since 2019.

A Claims.co.uk spokesperson says: “While no one likes to think about young people being put at risk, it’s clear that some school runs are more dangerous than others for school-age pedestrians – and that prioritising their safety is key.
“You aren’t able to control when an accident happens, but you can ensure that you teach your child road safety tips to help equip them with the life skills they need to navigate the school run.
“You may also want to identify any road safety signs that could be improved, and request these from your local council – especially if it’s something like better street lighting or a safe crossing.”
