The UK city where Range Rovers are ‘impossible’ to insure as thefts on the rise

Range Rover drivers in London are struggling to find insurance cover for their cars which are dubbed as Britain’s “most stolen” vehicles.

In the year to March 2023, one in every 100 Land Rovers were stolen in Britain, with types of Range Rover accounting for six of the top 10 most stolen car models overall, according to comparison site Confused.com.

The Telegraph reports that only two insurers offer to provide cover for the Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic in London, while prices are so much cheaper in the likes of Sussex.

Figures for the average premium in Greater London from comparison site GoCompare suggested the annual cost of insuring a Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic is now £3,555 – which is more than double the cost in 2022.

The Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic is a popular car for criminals to steal with two in every hundred of the model stolen, according to statistics.

Conservative MP Greg Smith said: “There is undoubtedly a considerable degree of serious organised crime that targets Range Rovers for theft.”

“It is incumbent on police forces to do everything possible to crack down on these crimes and protect Range Rover owners.

“It is unacceptable to just let the crime persist and insurance premiums to skyrocket.”

Experts say Range Rovers are of a target to criminals because of their desirability, high resale value, and keyless technology.

Ceri McMillan, of GoCompare, said the average premium for insuring a Range Rover Velar had increased 82 percent since last year.

She said: “This is a hefty increase year on year, and while it’s been widely reported that car insurance premiums have increased in general, this represents a significant uplift for this type of model.

“This may be due to this particular type of car being at a higher risk of theft due to it being a high-end model in the car market.”

Data obtained through Freedom of Information requests indicated Land Rovers were three times more likely to be stolen than the second most popular target for thieves, the Mercedes-Benz.

Among the 896,948 licensed Land Rovers in the UK, 8,284 were reported as stolen during the period, which equates to 924 thefts for every 100,000, according to figures released earlier this year.
