The tiny theme park you’ve never heard of that’s rated higher than Thorpe Park

When you’re thinking of British theme parks “absolutely packed” with fun for all the family, you’re probably thinking of Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Chessington World of Adventures.

Although all of these sites are popular for a reason, only one of them is in the Tripadvisor top three – that’s Alton Towers in Stoke-on-Trent.

You may have heard of Paultons Park in Hampshire, which takes the top spot, but you’re unlikely to know the theme park coming in at number three – the tiny Stockeld Park in Wetherby, West Yorkshire.

Stockeld Park is a little different to most other amusement parks in that significant sections of it are indoors, meaning that come rain or shine everyone’s having a good time.

The “unique all-weather family attraction” draws families of all ages to blow off some steam and the site has been very well received on Tripadvisor.

Describing its main attractions, Stockeld Park said: “The renowned Enchanted Forest is filled with magical interactive fun and is home to five fantastically themed adventure playgrounds!

“Zip down the zip wire in Spider’s Lair, take a Teapot Slide or man the pirate ship at Woodsands Cove. Beyond the Enchanted Forest, we offer our giant yew tree maze with over a mile of paths.

“When it’s raining you can enjoy live theatre productions and themed events. The Playhive, our unique, fabulous indoor play centre is now open! It’s one of Europe’s largest and most original indoor play centres”.

Visitors in general have left glowing reviews of the fun-filled play centre, with one saying: “We enjoyed a great day at Stockeld Park, all 11 of us ranging in age from seven weeks to 71!

“Plenty to do for the toddler aged two to the seven-year-olds. The Hive space is amazing and all enjoyed the challenges of the equipment available in such a safe setting. All the staff were very charming, professional and helpful.

“Even the showers did not dampen the enthusiasm for the day.”

Another left a stellar review: “Lots of things to do, plenty of entertainment for kids. We spent 5 hours there and didn’t get bored for a minute. It was a very good day out.”

Meanwhile, the famous Thorpe Park, although perhaps Britain’s best-known theme park, comes in at six on the Tripadvisor list.

Plenty of Tripadvisor users had plenty of positive things to say about the site, but not all the reviews were favourable.

One disgruntled visitor asked: “Why ram as many school trips as possible into the park?! To top it off..loads of rides shut”.

Another, giving the park a savage one-star review, said: “I am absolutely appalled that you pay entry into the park and have no warning that you will potentially not even get on 1 ride.

“What a waste of money, very upset children. If the cost to enter is not expensive enough you then feel compelled to purchase fast passes to access rides, which were unfortunately sold out on our visit.

“I would have footed the cost of the fast passes just to ensure my children did not have to queue 2 hours plus for a ride!!”

Ranked at an astonishing 18th place in the Tripadvisor list is Chessington World of Adventures Resort.

One reviewer, slamming the park, said: “We will never visit again until the fast track is a thing of the past.

“Just seems like a 1st class and 2nd class system by another name, hugely unfair that just because someone is prepared to pay a massive amount more whether they can afford it or not, to do the same thing they don’t have to queue”.
