The surprise British trait that Prince Charles shares with Prime Minister Boris Johnson

The Duke of Cornwall is reportedly very particular about how he likes his brew, he likes adding the milk last before taking out the teabag and is known to give stern instructions to staff when they’re preparing his beverages. Evan Samson a hospitality manager at Dumfries House, offered an insight into the Prince of Wales quirkier behaviour. According to the manager Charles demands the handle of the cup to be placed to the right, with the teaspoon under the handle.

Charles “expects the staff to present a jug of milk guests want to top up their cuppa, which is a special brew supplied to the royal household by tea giant Twinings,” he said.

Mr Samson told the Sunday Times the key is to use loose tea and a teapot — one teaspoon of tea leaves per teacup plus an extra one for the pot.

He added that the water must be heated to 70C for green tea and 100C for Earl Grey or English breakfast tea.

The temperature of the water must be measured with a thermometer.

There are different rules for making green and black tea – while green tea should be brewed for three minutes, black tea must be left for five.

A perfect royal brew should use organic honey instead of sugar which is added to the teacup before the tea is poured in.

While the brand of tea Prince Charles drinks is a closely-guarded royal secret Twinings has heard the royal warrant to supply the royal household tea since 1837.

The fussiness about his tea is surprisingly something that the royal shares with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Johnson was photographed pouring milk into the cup first—and leaving the tea bag for a long time, leading to some social media users heaping scorn on the politician.

One horrified viewer said: ‘Didn’t they tell you where the spoons are in the kitchen?’ while another said: ‘You’re supposed to take the tea bag out you utter clown.’

One person wrote: “Am I the only one who is upset he left the tea bag in the mug? I was hoping it would end with ‘thank you, Prime Minister. pause Err, Boris? You forgot the tea bag. Cripes.”

Another said: “They forget to tell Boris that when you make a cup of tea you need to take the tea bag out.”

The Prime Minister has defended his preferences though saying that leaving the bag in his tea “lets it brew and makes it stronger.”

If you’re looking for a royal recommendation to accompany your very specifically made cup of tea the Queen shared one of her favourite mince pie recipes in the run up to Christmas.

Shared from Buckingham Palace, the post said that Royal pastry chefs were “excited” to share their recipe to the public.

The website says: “Royal Pastry chefs reveal how they make mince pies for The Royal Family and their guests.”

Royal Pastry chef Kathryn Cuthbertson gave a very important tip to people attempting to make mince pies.

She said: “Give yourself plenty of time.

Chef de Partie Victoria Scupham agreed and said: “Pastry is not something that likes to be rushed.”

The article on the website said the Royal kitchens will create over 1200 mine pies for festive receptions held at the palaces.

The chefs have also been known to make Sablés à la Confiture – also known as ‘Jammy Dodgers’ – gingerbread and roulade.
